With only a few more days left in 2011, I am taking this opportunity to sit and reflect on this past year and not in the way Yogi’s or CPA’s do. Instead I like to reflect on those moments in fashion that set the viral world spinning out of control such as stories like the one where John Galliano lost his cool and then in a drunken state regaled a couple in a Parisian restaurant with his anti-Semitic tirade. This was such a bad scene that his cool was the first to go then it was his job. To make matters worse, instead of apologizing for his drunken behavior he claimed he was not responsible. There are times when saying, “I’m really sorry,” goes a long way.
The other story that took over the blogosphere and news stations around the world was the Royal Wedding. Kate Middleton’s marriage to Prince William was all we heard about for months. The pomp and circumstance seemed out of control… the three big stories here were Kate’s dress, Princess Beatrice’s obnoxious hat and Pippa’s (Kate’s sister) back side. Surrounding the story of the marriage has been talk of Kate’s chic style. Everything she wears is deemed fashionable, even her pantyhose. That is right. She was spotted wearing flesh-colored pantyhose on her way to meet the Queen and just like a flash flood, flesh colored pantyhose became the “in” thing. After years of being liberated from the steel-belted, beige and dated under-garment we were advised to wear them again because Kate was wearing them to meet the Queen.
The saddest story was of the passing of Elizabeth Taylor. A beauty that possessed great talent for acting was also a fashion icon. Her clothes and jewels were so remarkable that they were exhibited around the world before being auctioned off. Movies like Cat on a Hot Tin Roof come to mind where in her sexy bravado she walks into her bedroom in a body hugging silk slip with a whiskey. My two favorite Elizabeth Taylor quotes (she hated to be called ‘Liz”) are, “It is not the having, it is the getting,” and “The problem with people who have no vices is that generally you can be pretty sure they are going to have some pretty annoying virtues”. Beauty, talent and a sense of humor…
Are you taking notes Mr. Galliano?
Happy New Year Everyone!
