Fashion can be daunting. We want to be stylish while giving the impression that it was all so effortless. But the fact of the matter is putting an outfit together for work, travel or an evening out can make our heads spin. Questions pop up like, “Is this outfit appropriate for the occasion?” and “Does this all go together?” But the other question that can cross our minds is, “Is this in style or fashion relevant?” The reason for this quandary is simple. Everyday we are inundated with fleeting fashion information modeled by famously underfed females. When it comes to making decisions about everything else in our lives, we do it with stealth focus. But making a decision about what to wear for meetings and a night on the town can throw us into a panic. In a perfect fashion world we would have dressing for such occasions down to a science. We would have our own collection of separates that would all go together. These pieces would not wrinkle and could be accessorized differently for different occasions. What happens to us when we step into the dressing room can sometimes be paramount to a nervous breakdown when things don’t fit. Watching ourselves squeeze into a pair of pants, marked ‘size 8,’ we are mortified when we cannot get the zipper all the way up. We walk away defeated and depressed. The next time you go shopping there are some things you should keep in mind in order to avoid a tearful exit from your favorite boutique.
1- Not all sizes are created equal. There was a time when sizes were standardized. That all changed in the 70s when some Madison Avenue genius figured out that if clothing reflected a smaller size than the ones instituted by the ‘National Bureau of Commerce,’ we would be more inclined to purchase. They were right. Just to give you an idea of how dramatically sizing has changed, in 1953 a size 16 or 18 was equivalent to a size 8 today. Guidelines are helpful for so many things. For example, without traffic guidelines there would be a lot more accidents. And then there are guidelines for proper etiquette—this is important stuff. Without these rules of protocol I would not know how much time I had to send a wedding gift. Important stuff when you are considering time and budgets. These guidelines sometimes seem a little restrictive. What we want to do is fly by the seat of our skinny pants and see where we land. The reality is that these rules simplify our lives by giving us the groundwork for making better choices. Fashion can be complicated.
