Talking You Off The (Fashion) Ledge

06.27.2011 by Catherine Jane //

It kills me to read some articles written regarding the ins and outs of fashion.
These articles are written in such a manner as to suggest that if we follow the
fashion rules we will be more popular and more beautiful. If only it was that simple.
I spend a good amount of time perusing fashion blogs because like any inquisitive voyeur,
watching is my high. Sometimes I walk away from the computer in a daze as I cannot believe my eyes (daisy dukes are back?!). Other times I fall into a serene state as I watch dresses becoming more popular.
The best way to proceed is to review fashion mistakes of the past.
Catsuits; One piece stretchy bodysuit first worn by Batman’s adversary Catwoman (1940); makes another debut on the streets of the UK as disco becomes all the rage (1980).
Big Shoulder Pads; First surfaced in 1930 and made popular by Joan Crawford.  Fifty years later they are worn in everything from suits to t-shirts and sometimes both and at the same time(1980).
Thin Headbands: originally worn by American Indians and made fashionable by Hippies (1960).
Jumpsuits; Seen first on infants and very young children (1872); Thay make their first appearance as trendy adult wear (1960).
Daisy Dukes; Incredibly short shorts. Debuted on the television show Dukes of Hazard (1979).
Harem Pants; Full, dropped crotch pants that are tight around the calf originated in India (circa?). Designer Paul Poiret made them popular in 1911. Musician MC Hammer wore them in his videos bringing them back in style (1980).
Must we repeat sins of the past? Apparently so.
Here is my suggestion, before you run out to purchase your first pair of daisy dukes, imagine yourself in them. Close your eyes and have a look at your legs in daisy dukes, not Jessica Simpson’s. Now have a look at your rear end, not Cameron Diaz’s. Do this every time you hear a trend calling.  Still wanting a jumpsuit? Call me and I will personally talk you off the (fashion) ledge.
